Rich Is a baseball a lot harder than a cricket ball?     Well I suppose you can call baseball players pansies, but there is more to it in my opinion. Sure you cricket players have guts, but baseball gloves have been a fixture in the game for decades. Players have grown up using a glove since childhood and have grown accustomed to doing so. Also, it would be senseless not to try to keep broken hands/fingers to a minimum so that the player can play when there are gloves available to limit it. Also players use gloves to do things such as flip the ball without using their hands on a double play (although this is rare), catch balls going over the wall in teh outfield (robbing a home run), and making diving plays. Catchers have 90 mph balls coming at them and also must be able to catch balls changing direction and balls that are not thrown where they expect in a quick manner. At the pitcher position, pitchers use the glove to disguise their pitches. 1st basemen need to scoop the ball with their gloves at times. Hopefully you understand my "arguments." To turn this around on you (just food for thought), how come cricket players wear padding on their legs and baseball players don't? Interesting question, huh?   If baseball players were made to stop the ball with their hands, you'd have longer games due to the endless line of grotesque hand injuries. It'd just be a long afternoon of watching grown men writhing about the field in immense pain. It seems that you're trying to look at two separate issues and come up with the answer. I think that when you speak of COMPARING balls to strikes , you're speaking of when there is a batter at the plate and he has a count of 2-1. Then you add in a pitcher gives up 8 hits. That's in the Pitch Count and is a separate statistic. The Pitch Count includes EVERY pitch that a pitcher throws regardless of what happens to it. Strike , Ball , Foul , Bunt , HR , Triple , w/e. Every pitch is counted and that is the Pitchers Pitch Count. It is a totally separate thing from the Batter Pitch Count. Even if the ball was hit to right field an the RF throws him out at first, same result 1st play for 3rd out and no run scores Now if the batter / runner crosses first base and gets caught rounding the bag or runs threw the bag being safe and turns and makes an attempt to go to second and is tagged out  then the run will be counted, even though the the third out was made it was after he was safe at first.   Although his answer in the end is correct, this stuff about the "key" being the first play by a fielder is not correct. Report It  all they have to do to put first base runney out is touch base not runner.then run does not count. No run. As long as the guy gets thrown out at first, the run will not score, even if he crosses the plate before the throw to first is made.
