The rest of the players are expected to catch / stop the ball with only their bare hands. Yet in baseball all of the fielder have gloves. Is this because they are a bunch of pansies? or not. Please put forward your arguements

Well I suppose you can call baseball players pansies, but there is more to it in my opinion. Sure you cricket players have guts, but baseball gloves have been a fixture in the game for decades. Players have grown up using a glove since childhood and have grown accustomed to doing so. Also, it would be senseless not to try to keep broken hands/fingers to a minimum so that the player can play when there are gloves available to limit it. Also players use gloves to do things such as flip the ball without using their hands on a double play (although this is rare), catch balls going over the wall in teh outfield (robbing a home run), and making diving plays. Catchers have 90 mph balls coming at them and also must be able to catch balls changing direction and balls that are not thrown where they expect in a quick manner. At the pitcher position, pitchers use the glove to disguise their pitches. 1st basemen need to scoop the ball with their gloves at times. Hopefully you understand my ”arguments.” To turn this around on you (just food for thought), how come cricket players wear padding on their legs and baseball players don’t? Interesting question, huh?
 
If baseball players were made to stop the ball with their hands, you’d have longer games due to the endless line of grotesque hand injuries. It’d just be a long afternoon of watching grown men writhing about the field in immense pain.

Because the ball is harder and travels at a much faster speed. Plus Cricket is not considered a real sport in north America. Its more of a game for pansies who run around like wild turkeys and make no money.

Baseballs and cricket-balls seem to be pretty much the same in hardness and dimensions, both are leather covered cork and about 5inches across. Both are about 5oz - cricket balls are slightly heavier. Both are regularly propelled at over 90mph. Both can be hit over a hundred yards into the outfield.

20/20 cricket and baseball have a lot in common. I think (and other writers agree) fans of the two games have a lot in common. I like watching both.

If wicket keepers were padded like a baseball catcher then there would never be a bye. Wicket keepers don’t wear as much padding and so they stand further back from the wicket.

Its a bit like American football, armour protects you which means you can tackle harder.

For the people who say a American football player ”wouldn’t last 5 minutes in rugby league” I’d be inclined to agree, but I also think the reverse is true.

Batsmen in cricket bat for much longer (hours and even days!) and hit more balls than baseball hitters because its a batsman’s game. The cricketer aims to average 40.00 runs per innings, the baseballer aims to average 0.300. Thats a big difference!

Baseball gloves protect you which means you can catch more balls. Its much more of a pitchers/fielders game

To sum up it seems to me to be that baseballs are rarely dropped by outfielders whereas cricketers regularly drop catches. Baseball fielders are rarely injured and are easily replaced, cricketers are regularly injured and full substitutes are not allowed. 

Its a different dynamic to the game and a different problem for the respective players to solve.

Played in 3,298 games and had 3,771 career hits. That is amazing considering he had almost 500 more hits than games played in. That is an average of more than a hit a game in a 23 year career. Talk about consistency. 

Ty Cobb was a great hitter in a time when pitching was not as dominant as years later. Cy Young was out of his prime when Cobb came into the league and Babe Ruth was the dominant pitcher of Cobb’s time and Ruth only won 94 games and back then they pitched on no rest in between starts sometimes. He should have had many more wins considering how many starts he made. People mention that Ty Cobb won the ”Quadruple Crown” in 1909, that he did, but they failed to mention that he led the league in HR’s with 9. He also led the league in RBI’s with 107. Those are some pretty weak numbers compared to the baseball that has been played over the last 75 years. Not that it matters but he also beat his wife regularly.

Therefore the best hitter (if you don’t know right now) in the history of baseball is…………………..

Rose was great. Cobb was good. Ortiz is nowhere close to their level yet granted he’s a great POWER hitter but plain and simple Ted Williams is the best.

Wee Willie Keeler. You said history, dude. Go back and take a look at Keeler’s stats in the dead ball era (turn of the century), and that’s even considering that some of his stats weren’t even recorded properly.

I’ll take Joe Jackson over Babe Ruth any day. Ty Cobb called him the best natural hitter he had ever seen, and Babe Ruth Copied his swing.

Otherwise one of the most underrated hitters of all time, but one of the best was Carl Yastrzemski, yes he is in the hall of fame, but when you talk about best hitters his name NEVER comes up. Last triple crown winner in hitting, 3419 hits, 452 Home Runs and hell he had a .282 average. Not bad at all but not the best obviously, if i was taking a team id put Yaz on there for sure.

The best hitter of all time is Ty Cobb. He had a .367 carrer average and over 4100 hits. Pete Rose has a few more hits then him but his average is around .300, so it really is not even close.

If you go for average it was Ty Cobb, the original hit king.

For power and average it was Ted Williams. Williams always said he wanted the man on the street to see him and say, ”There goes Teddy Ballgame. The best d*** hitter in history.”

I’m with Chipmaker - Pete Rose isn’t even in the top 50. Interesting that you didn’t include ”most career outs,” since Pete owns that one by a huge margin.

The guy was a decent singles hitter who hung around for a long time, but there’s no way he belongs in the discussion. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but you’re horribly misguided here on thinking Rose is that good.

Well I am not gonna go with someone way back when and I am not gonna go with someone in today’s age…

I am going to go with Tony Gwynn, that guy can flat out hit, a nice pure compact swing, he makes contact every damn time. In 20 seasons the guy only struck out 484 times in 9288 career at-bats, now thats always putting the ball in play. He won numerous batting titles and got over 200 hits 5 times in his career. Over 3000 hits and almost twice as many walks as strikeouts (790BB). It was a priviledge to watch this guy hit…one of the best pure hitters in the game.

Hits are counted as strikes in the baseball pitch count. Basically, there are balls and everything else is a strike. There are no wasted pitches in the pitch count.
 
Strikes i believe, they call the foul balls strikes, and those are hit… so why not call fair balls strikes. I am 99.99999999% sure they are strikes, great question!

It seems that you’re trying to look at two
separate issues and come up with the answer.
I think that when you speak of COMPARING
balls to strikes , you’re speaking of when there
is a batter at the plate and he has a count of 2-1.
Then you add in a pitcher gives up 8 hits.
That’s in the Pitch Count and is a separate statistic.
The Pitch Count includes EVERY pitch that a pitcher
throws regardless of what happens to it.
Strike , Ball , Foul , Bunt , HR , Triple , w/e.
Every pitch is counted and that is the Pitchers
Pitch Count.
It is a totally separate thing from the Batter Pitch Count.
Coaches like to keep track of the Pitchers total pitch
count so that they don’t overuse a pitcher and wear his arm out.

Some baseball coaches actually include pickoff attempts, too.

No pitch counts. Played 9 innings This is one of the worst stats in the game and going to destroy it as a game of baseball.

Batter / runner out , No run scored, 1st play on the batter / runner was at first base for the 3rd out.

Even if the ball was hit to right field an the RF throws him out at first, same result
